The service
Hedge cutting for neat boundaries, more light and less hassle
Hedges make brilliant boundaries, but they never stop growing. Keeping them straight and level is hard, tiring work, especially on tall or long runs where you need steps, the right tools and somewhere to put a mountain of clippings.
We cut hedges of any size for homeowners, landlords and commercial sites across Solihull. That covers privet, laurel, beech, leylandii and conifer screens, box and other formal hedging, plus mixed and informal boundaries. Each job finishes with a full clear-up: clippings raked out of borders, swept off paths and taken away.
Our customers often book a hedge cut alongside lawn mowing or regular maintenance, so the whole garden is brought back into shape in one go. Please note we cut and shape hedges; we don't carry out tree surgery.
Why it matters
Why leaving a hedge costs you more later
A hedge that's left for a season or two doesn't just look scruffy; it gets wider, taller and harder to bring back into shape.
It swallows your garden
Unchecked hedges spread outwards, stealing lawn and border space and narrowing paths and driveways.
Bare patches appear
When growth only happens at the top and outside, the inside goes woody and brown. Once a hedge is bare at the base it's slow to recover.
Light and views disappear
Tall hedges shade lawns, beds and windows. Grass beneath them thins and moss takes over.
Neighbour and pavement issues
Hedges that overhang paths, roads or next door can cause friction and obstruct pedestrians and sightlines.
Common mistakes we see
- Cutting the top wider than the base, which starves the lower branches of light.
- Cutting back hard into old wood on conifers, which often won't regrow.
- Leaving clippings in borders where they rot and smother plants.
- Using unstable ladders on tall hedges, a common cause of garden injuries.
Our process
How the job runs, step by step
- 1
Tell us about the hedge
Send roughly the length, height and type. A photo helps, but isn't essential.
- 2
Free quote
We look at access, height and how much growth needs to come off, then give you a clear price.
- 3
Agree the shape
We confirm the height and profile you want before we start, so there are no surprises.
- 4
Cut and shape
Each face and the top are cut straight and level, tapering slightly so light reaches the base.
- 5
Full clear-up
Clippings are raked from beds, swept off paths and taken away. Your garden is left clean and tidy.

In detail
Hedge cutting explained: types, timing and technique
Different hedges need different treatment. Here's how we approach the most common types we see in Solihull gardens.
Formal hedges
Privet, box, beech and yew look best cut to a clean, geometric shape. They usually need cutting at least once or twice a year to hold their lines.
Conifer and leylandii screens
Fast-growing screens need regular trimming to stay under control. They don't reliably regrow from old brown wood, so we trim the green growth rather than cutting back hard.
Laurel and large-leaved hedges
Laurel grows vigorously and can quickly block paths and light. We shape these carefully so the finish stays tidy without heavily shredded leaves.
Informal and mixed hedges
Wildlife and mixed native hedges are tidied to a softer, natural shape that keeps them in bounds while staying informal.
Timing and nesting birds
Late spring through to late summer is the main cutting season. We check hedges for active nests before cutting, as nesting birds are protected.
Residential vs commercial
Home hedges are about finish and privacy. On rental and commercial sites we also make sure paths, signage and sightlines are kept clear.
