The service

Patios that start with the groundwork

Patios are one of our core landscaping services. We lay porcelain, natural sandstone and block paving for homes across Solihull and the surrounding areas.

What you see is the paving, but what makes a patio last is underneath it: a dug-out base, a compacted sub-base, the right bedding and a fall that carries rainwater away from the house. That groundwork is where cheaper jobs cut corners, and it's where we spend the time.

A new patio suits anyone who wants an outdoor space to eat, sit and entertain, people replacing a cracked or sunken old patio, and those preparing a property for sale or rent. For larger projects we usually provide a CAD drawing so you can see the layout before any work starts.

Why it matters

What goes wrong with poorly laid patios

A badly built patio can look fine for a few months, then start to fail. Fixing it usually means lifting it and starting again.

Sinking and rocking slabs

A thin or uncompacted base settles unevenly, leaving trip hazards and slabs that move underfoot.

Standing water

Without the right fall and drainage, water pools on the surface, turns green and can run towards the house.

Cracks and loose joints

Weak bedding and poor pointing let water in, which freezes, expands and breaks joints apart.

Weeds through every gap

Gaps and failing joints quickly fill with weeds and moss.

Common mistakes we see

  • Laying slabs on a few dabs of mortar instead of a full bed.
  • Skipping the sub-base to save time.
  • Laying porcelain without the correct primer, so it doesn't bond.
  • Building a patio level with, or above, the damp-proof course of the house.

In detail

Patio materials and methods explained

The right material depends on the look you want, how much maintenance you'll accept and how the space is used.

Porcelain paving

Dense, stain-resistant and very low maintenance, with a crisp modern look. It needs a priming slurry on the back of each tile so it bonds to the bed, and precise cutting for clean lines.

Natural sandstone

Warm, varied tones and a traditional feel. Each slab is slightly different, so laying is about arranging colours and thicknesses for an even finish. Sealing can help protect it.

Block paving

Hard-wearing small units laid on a compacted base and sand, then locked together with kiln-dried sand. Well suited to paths, larger areas and patterns.

Drainage and levels

Every patio is laid with a fall away from the house. Where needed, we add channels or soakaways to deal with water from larger surfaces.

Replacing an old patio

Old cracked or sunken paving is lifted and removed, the base is checked or rebuilt, and the new surface is laid on solid ground.

Patios as part of a wider build

Many patios are part of bigger projects with steps, retaining walls, new turf or planting, all handled by the same team.
