The service
A new lawn starts with the ground beneath it
Turf gives you an instant lawn, but only if the ground underneath is right. Lumps, hollows, stones and compacted soil all show through the new grass and stop roots taking hold.
We clear the old lawn and weeds, cultivate and level the soil, and lay the turf tightly with staggered joints. It's for homeowners with patchy or worn-out lawns, new builds with poor ground, people finishing a landscaping project, and landlords refreshing a garden.
Once it's established, your new lawn can go straight onto a regular mowing round with us.
Why it matters
Why poor turfing fails
Turf laid straight onto unprepared ground often looks good for a week, then shows every problem underneath.
Bumpy, uneven lawn
Hollows and humps make mowing hard and the lawn look scruffy.
Turf doesn't root
Compacted soil stops roots growing down, so the turf dries out and shrinks.
Gaps and brown seams
Poorly butted joints open up, leaving visible lines across the lawn.
Waterlogging
Heavy, unprepared clay holds water, leading to moss and soft patches.
Common mistakes we see
- Laying turf over old grass and weeds.
- Not levelling or firming the soil first.
- Leaving rolls stacked for days before laying.
- Not watering enough in the first weeks.

In detail
Turfing explained: preparation, laying and aftercare
Most of the work in a good lawn happens before the turf arrives.
Clearing the old lawn
Old grass, weeds and debris are removed so they can't grow through or rot under the new turf.
Cultivating and levelling
The soil is loosened, stones removed and the surface raked and firmed to an even level.
Heavy clay soils
Many Solihull gardens sit on heavy soil. Improving the top layer helps drainage and root growth.
Laying technique
Rolls are laid in a brick pattern, butted tightly together and firmed down for full contact with the soil.
Watering and first cut
New turf needs regular watering for the first few weeks. The first cut is high, once roots have taken hold.
Turf vs artificial grass
If an area gets heavy wear or very little light, artificial grass may suit it better. We offer both through our landscaping service.
